Zaniya's Story and YOUR Impact on Her Success

Hi,

My name is Zaniya. I’m 17 and a member at YouthBuild Lake County. From the first day I came to YouthBuild, I felt comfortable and safe. Before YouthBuild, I didn’t have very high self-esteem. The staff at YouthBuild really helped me build my confidence and being able to do things like mock interviews has made me feel good about finding a job. I was even elected to join the Youth Policy Council and got to plan events and be a leader for my peers.

When I started the program, I only had two high school credits. Because of YouthBuild, I completed my course work and earned my diploma. Now I am a high school graduate, I just bought my first car, and I am working part-time. I want to study social work and plan to enroll at the College of Lake County to earn an associate degree and then transfer to a four-year HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

YouthBuild helped me with so much. I’ve found a clear path for myself and I have higher self-esteem. The staff is amazing, and they really care. I know if I need help getting enrolled in college or getting a good job, YouthBuild will be here for me. I have a support system here for life. It was powerful to realize what a successful support system looked like. They met me where I needed help and gave me the tools to succeed.
