WUSA9 Turkeys for Troops: Day of Giving

USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore (USO-Metro) established Turkeys for Troops in 2008 to assist junior enlisted military families (E-6 and below). Due to financial setbacks and the high cost of living in the National Capital Region, USO-Metro experienced an increase in direct calls from service members requesting emergency food support during the Thanksgiving holiday. Seeing a need, USO-Metro took action to support local service members and military families.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our service members have continued on with their missions while also pivoting to relief efforts to help our entire nation. Like the rest of the country, the lives of our military families have been disrupted with childcare dilemmas, spouses laid off, and social distancing and quarantines causing additional stress.

Now more than ever, we expect an increase in food assistance programs around the holiday season, and we need your help to feed this need.

Since partnering with TEGNA WUSA9 in 2009, the annual Turkeys for Troops Telethon has raised over $1.1M in support of the program to supply service members and their families with holiday celebration budgetary relief. This year, WUSA9 will host the first Turkeys for Troops: Day of Giving to continue safely raising funds in the face of COVID-19.

Thanks to our partners at T-Mobile, all donations made on November 11th will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $10,000.

True to the USO-Metro mission of connecting service members to family, home, and country, this program encourages military families and single service member units to gather together in fellowship and camaraderie for the holidays.

Not only will your contribution fund our Turkeys for Troops boxes, but it will also go towards USO-Metro's food assistance programs including our food pantry and produce drives.
