About Support Community Teamwork's Efforts to Alleviate Homelessness

Support Community Teamwork's Effort to Alleviate Homelessness!

This holiday season, we are asking for your support for two important, and life-saving projects.

As a Community Action Agency (CAA), Community Teamwork is focused on addressing the causes and conditions of poverty, one of which is alleviating homelessness. It is estimated that there are currently more than 100 unsheltered individuals who literally are sleeping on the streets.

A leader in addressing the homeless issue in our community, Community Teamwork continues to find ways to provide housing, shelter and services to those in need. We know that development of new housing sites is critical to address the needs of those individuals who find themselves without a safe, clean and stable place to call home.

We are a Housing First proponent and understand that over 300 new units of housing in the City of Lowell are necessary to address the needs of the unsheltered population.

Help us reach our goal of creating 300 low threshold housing!

Help Us Build a Women's Shelter

Community Teamwork is in the final stages of building a Women's Shelter in Lowell. This shelter will be the first, and only dedicated women's shelter North of Boston. It will serve 50-plus women each night over the age of 18 who are considered homeless and don't meet the criteria for a family shelter and do not feel safe staying in co-ed accommodations. Five of the beds will be set aside for youth and young adults ages 18-24.

All the women in our care will benefit from a team of staff who will help them navigate issues including housing, finance and budgeting, employment, education, food and nutrition, school, legal, health, and daily living skills. The goal will be to help women obtain and maintain their own permanent housing.

The need for a dedicated women's shelter is increasing every day, and the numbers don't lie.

Of the 580,000 people living in homeless shelters and on the streets around America, roughly 38 % are women.  In 1980, women made up just 5 % of those considered homeless.

Between 2022 and 2023, the number of homeless women in Massachusetts increased 24.2%.

A growing number of the women who find themselves housing insecure are older, many of whom are senior citizens.

Women who are unhoused face many challenges, including behavioral health issues, deep trauma, domestic violence, sex trafficking, and a lack of housing. Single homeless women have fewer options when seeking shelter.
