Impact of COVID-19 to Our Y

With the mandatory closing of our Y last March, we lost more than $660,000 in program and membership fees. In addition, due to the inability to have large groups gather safely, our Annual Gala and Auction will not be able to happen. This is an additional net loss of $145,000. These unfortunate COVID-related losses hit us so hard, with the estimate being more than $805,000.

Learn More About Our Y

As an organization which touches the lives of so many people across our region, through so many programs and avenues, it is sometimes hard to communicate the depth and breadth of our YMCA. Please take a moment to watch this video, and also visit our gallery to hear the stories of some extraordinary people who have been touched by the Y.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO, DIANE DICKERSON

During this time of such challenges and unknowns, I come to you with a bundle of hope and a heart full of gratitude. It has been an extraordinary 8 months for our country, our state, our community and our Y. From the moment COVID-19 hit us all, the Y stepped in to help and provide whatever was needed:

  • We immediately opened our Emergency Childcare for the families of healthcare workers, first responders and essential businesses.

  • We opened both our camps so that our children would have a safe and nurturing place to be all summer.

  •  In September, we started our All-Day Y Academy for our school-age children who were only going to their own school two days a week. We have been supporting all of our school districts in the region to ensure our children would be well taken care of and their educational efforts would continue even though they were not in their normal classrooms.

We have done this non-stop since March 15th with a very definitive set of practices and protocols in place that are keeping us safe and protecting the children we serve.

As well as we have done with protecting our children, serving our families, and supporting our community, it all has taken a toll on our beloved YMCA.

Every year your donation to our Giving Campaign has been so critical, but never before has it been more important than now. From my heart and the hearts of all the people we are serving, I ask you to please donate this year to our GIVING CAMPAIGN. If you have given in years past and you have the means to do so, please consider giving a little more this year. If you have never given before, please look into your hearts to support us during this pandemic period. I honestly don’t know what so many families, children and seniors would have done without our YMCA during this very trying time. We have worked so hard to not just keep our children and families safe, but we have made such incredible efforts to combat hunger, loneliness, mental health, social injustice and financial hardships. We have given more than $270,000 in financial assistance to those in need. And, this is why WE NEED YOU!

Every dollar donated to our Y is an investment in our community and it goes directly to serve more than 12,000 participants in our diverse and numerous programs. I humbly ask you to please give our beloved YMCA your support by joining me in donating to this year’s Bangor Region YMCA’s Giving Campaign.

    With Gratitude,
    Diane Dickerson, CEO
