Sólo Cantar

SOLO CANTAR celebrating the healing power of music

Support People Living with ALS

Uncertainty and risk around COVID-19 has impacted all of us, and that certainly includes people living with ALS and their loved ones, many of whom need specialized care, numerous doctor’s appointments, and may live in skilled nursing facilities. Click here to learn more about ALS.
My family and I are so grateful for the work of the ALS Association North Carolina Chapter. Through one of the hardest times for our family, they supported us in navigating the costs, complexities, and grief of coping with what turned out to be a rapid decline in dad's functioning. Specifically, they were able to connect us with compassionate ALS experts, and their Loan Equipment Program alleviated the cost of adaptive equipment. The chapter's work supports people living with ALS and their families, as well as medical research to end this devastating disease.
Any funds raised beyond what we need for production will go directly to the ALS Association, NC Chapter!
Support Black and Brown Artists
Finally, giving to this fundraiser also directly supports Black and Brown artists and local businesses in Durham, NC, leading to an event that will support the great work of the ALSA NC Chapter. Please contact us if you're interested in sponsorship or other collaborations!
You can donate offline via Venmo @LeLaina-Romero, Cash App $LeLainaRomero, or https://www.paypal.me/lelainaR, or contact me directly to mail a check (write sólo cantar in the memo).

A Celebration of Life through Song & Story

Sólo Cantar comes to Durham, NC and your screens on 4/30/22!

Solo Cantar will weave stories and songs of healing through trauma, oppression, madness, and marginality, celebrating the life of Luis Felipe Romero, Jr., who died in Durham, North Carolina on June 20th, 2016, while living with his daughter LeLaina and son-in-law Mykal after being diagnosed with ALS only two months earlier.

A beautiful community of musicians and storytellers will celebrate Luis and bring Solo Cantar to life. Our team of volunteers along with Brevan Hampden Music, Le'Andra D. McPhatter, Ally J's Music, and more amazing local musicians will celebrate dad and bring Solo Cantar to life first on the stage at the Durham Arts Council PSI Theatre and again with dancing and connection in the Semans Gallery!

This show raises funds for the ALS, NC Chapter, and celebrates the healing power of music and my father Luis's life.  Solo Cantar also supports local Black and Brown artists!
