About Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

Today marks the beginning of a week like none other we have had at Paul’s Place.  Executive Director Bill McLennan shares how, in the face of a pandemic, Paul’s Place continues to adapt, determined to serve the community and fulfill our mission.

We are still providing weekday meals, case management, emergency food boxes, mail services, and our nurse’s clinic, while continuing our practice of listening to those who seek our services.  One hallmark of Paul’s Place is adapting to the changing needs of our neighbors, but without the support of many, our ability to help is limited.

Throughout this week, we will introduce you to several of our Paul’s Place guests who have had life-changing experiences here. They shared their stories with us before the pandemic, so you will notice there is no physical distancing or masks being worn. We will also share the progress on our next life changing and community-transforming project: The Groundwork Kitchen culinary arts training program.

Our hope is that you will see the great work that happens here at Paul’s Place.  It is work that cannot be done without our generous supporters. So thank you for your interest in our mission.  We are grateful for whatever support you can provide.

Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

Today, we would like to celebrate the future and the present. We are embarking on a new way to create impact in Southwest Baltimore by the creation of our Culinary Arts Training Program. This program will have a profound impact on 60 graduates each year, offering a tremendous return on investment and hope. This initiative advances our vision — that individuals and families living in the neighborhoods of Southwest Baltimore will have full access to high quality health care, education, employment, and housing, and the support necessary to live stable and self-sufficient lives.

Michael's Story

“Six years, six years is a long time. I was homeless for six years and once I finally got my place…”
Michael Walton, Sr. is but one example of how your generosity works. Michael experienced homelessness for years before connecting with Paul’s Place. He “had a lot of goals” and found the support he needed to bring his goals into focus at Paul’s Place. He began working with Ellen and with her guidance; he began to outline his goals and tackle them.
To support the many Michael’s who aren’t sure where to start, but who get on the road when the direction is clarified.

Carlene's Story

“I really feel a sense of pride. I really feel like I'm doing something, I'm helping change lives”
Take a moment and listen to Carlene tell us about her experience and consider a gift to Paul’s Place.
Paul’s Place is grateful for the level of commitment our guests feel and the eagerness with which they get involved to spread the word about our mission.

After-3 Program

I am the coordinator of the Paul's Place After-3 Program at George Washington Elementary in Southwest Baltimore, which serves 125 students -- half of the school’s student body.

My goal is to provide the academic support and enrichment opportunities focused on problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork skills while encouraging children to be children and have fun.

This year we formed small study groups allowing teachers to provide individual attention to each student. The outcomes have included mastery of subjects, confidence in ability, and homework independence.

Enrichment programs – the fun -- have included projects in architectural design, learning music through group drum lessons, and participating in the basketball league. All have contributed to building character, teamwork, discipline, and respect while having fun.

I am grateful to be part of Paul’s Place and to be in the school each day making a difference for families and children. I hope you will consider a gift of $50 or more to support the success of our students and to ensure the smiles continue.

Nicole Davis
After-3 Program Coordinator

Bonnie's Story

“I was on the third floor and had to jump out. I was on the news and all . . . Paul's Place helped me get back on my feet.”
Paul’s Place is a helping hand for 3500 families in Southwest Baltimore each year. Consider how your gift can help so many get back on their feet, particularly in the wake of COVID-19, which is disproportionately affecting disenfranchised communities.
