As we prepared to reopen our campus to students in the fall, we acknowledged that we were not only opening our doors during an unprecedented time of a global pandemic but also during a time in which our nation struggles against a long history of racism and bigotry. In late July, we shared with the entire Academy community our commitment to plan and take action to create a safer and more equitable environment for all our students including those who identify as Black, LBGTQ+, and/or other groups that are minoritized, marginalized, and discriminated against in our country.

As a part of that commitment, we are investing in several key initiatives to become a safer and more affirming school.

  • We have hired an experienced consultant, Dr. Armenta Hinton, to guide us in the creation of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategic plan.
  • We have invested in reading materials for our 7-12 grade students to engage weekly activities and discussions on race in the United States.
  • We will continue to provide ongoing training for faculty, staff, and students to examine our implicit bias and better support our BIPOC & LBGTQ+ students.
  • We will restructure and invest in curriculum that promotes progressive discussions that are more inclusive of marginalized communities.

Harrisburg Academy is committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. By giving to the DEI Fund, you are helping our school support our students in their work, embrace their identity, and encourage them to thrive here.
